“The opening of the border between Colombia and Venezuela has to mean first of all the need to raise the flags of peace. Fundamentally, on the border issue, peace was consolidated as a State policy of both governments, and I believe that is what the announcement by the leaders of both countries has done in order to vindicate the entire process of the call for dialogue and, ultimately, , to work together”, highlighted the deputy to the National Assembly (AN), Julio Chávez.
In an interview on the show In the air, broadcast on Venezuelan Television (VTV)Chávez indicated that the reactivation of the border not only involves initiating commercial exchange between the two nations, which is one of the most desired issues by the almost 8 million people who pass through this area, but also that the issues of peace, security and dialogue, so that this can guarantee businessmen, Venezuelans and Colombians, stability.
Likewise, he stressed that both governments must address the asymmetries in economic matters, where the main affected would be the Venezuelan State, because during the years of the border closure, promoted by the Duque government, Venezuela was affected by the blockade, while Colombia continued with the Free Trade Agreements with other nations.
“In Colombia the economy is not blocked, there are free trade agreements with seven or eight countries, and on the side of Venezuela the economy was blocked during all this time. These asymmetries must be worked on so that a commercial flow is produced based on the win-win scheme”, he pointed out.
