The match Popular Unity politicianled by former supreme judge Duberlí Rodríguezhas been formally excluded from participating in the next General Elections of 2026. The Judiciary resolved declare inadmissible the request presented by the representatives of the group to be registered after the deadline, citing strict compliance with the electoral schedule already in progress.
The court decision indicated that the stages of the electoral calendar cannot be modified once they have expired, except in exceptional cases of force majeure not proven by the party. The court was emphatic in pointing out that any alteration to the closed stages of the process would compromise the legality of the elections.
Despite denying the group’s registration, the Judiciary did issue a direct order to the National Elections Jury (JNE) to initiate an investigation into the matter.
The objective of this investigation is to determine who would be responsible for having “blocked or hindered” the registration of Unidad Popular within the legal period. The court considers that it is crucial to clarify whether there were administrative acts or omissions that prevented the regular registration process, since if confirmed, the principle of legality in the internal procedures of the electoral system would be affected.
In this way, Unidad Popular becomes the first party to be officially left out of the 2026 electoral contest due to deadlines.
