A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to comply with its previous ruling that reinstated the temporary protection status (TPS) for Venezuelans, also demanding the reopening of the TPS registration for Venezuelans for 24 hours.
The order was issued after the government’s refusal to allow access to a website to renew the current protections, which caused extensive confusion. Judge Edward Chen had previously ruled that the actions of the Trump administration, which stripped a million Venezuelans and Haitians, were illegal.
During an emergency hearing in San Francisco, the judge rejected the arguments of the government, which argued that the order was not yet, stating: “The order was effective immediately.”
The website used by the TPS holders had indicated that the TPS for Venezuela was “finished”, and the government said in a judicial document that it had no obligation to comply with the judge’s ruling.
The lack of compliance with the government with the previous court order has caused generalized chaos not only for TPS holders, but also for its employers and the general public, the ACLU explained in a statement that participates with its legal advice in the lawsuit.
Some statements filed before court revealed cases of TPS holders who lost their work or were arrested and ran a risk of deportation, despite their protected legal status.
