Édgar Coronel Aispuro, brother-in-law of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán Loera will continue in prison after a federal judge denied him freedom. Ruling that was appealed, and the case will be referred to a collegiate court to determine whether to confirm, modify or revoke it.

In 2015, the then Attorney General’s Office (PGR) obtained a formal prison order against the brother of Emma Coronel, wife of El Chapo.

According to investigations, Édgar Coronel would have supervised the construction of the tunnel through which the leader of the Sinaloa cartel escaped in July of that year; He helped Guzmán Loera descend through a hole in cell number 20 of the special treatment area of Cefereso number 1, and then drove a motorcycle installed on rails until he reached a house built in the vicinity of the prison center and then escaped to Sinaloa.

Years later, Judge Raquel Ivette Duarte, in the state of Mexico, acquitted Edgar Coronel of having participated in the kingpin’s escape. The judge ruled that the Attorney General’s Office did not provide sufficient evidence to locate him in time, place and manner.
