JUBs: multi-champion handball coach defends change in the sport

JUBs: multi-champion handball coach defends change in the sport

University could be the way to save sport in Brazil. This is the opinion of Eduardo Carlone, women’s handball coach at Universidade Paulista (Unip-SP), two-time JUBs champion. With nine National League titles, Pan-American Champion and former coach of the Brazilian national team, Carlone understands that the university model can be the salvation for Brazilian sport.JUBs: multi-champion handball coach defends change in the sport

“Here in Brazil we have the club model, and it is very difficult. The university model, which is well established in the United States, could be implemented in Brazil, encouraged, improved, so that, in the future, female players have a space to play.”

The example would be at JUBs Brasília 2024 itself.

“Here, this year, there were five teams from the National League at the JUBs. This is an outlet for all sports, not just handball. We have to improve. Not only at the university level, but also at the high school level. In addition to sport, there is the issue of education, of becoming a professional. An athlete’s career is short. The situation of clubs is getting worse, fewer clubs, fewer cities investing.”

In the women’s handball final at JUBs Brasília between Unip-SP and UniCesumar-PR, the fans chanted the two-time champion in just the final 10 seconds of the match.

The first half ended with a big advantage for the São Paulo team, 20 to 10. Eduardo Carlone himself knew that something unusual was happening.

“We played a very good first half, both offensively and defensively, but Maringá was far below its best. It is a National League team that is in the “Final Four”. We faced each other in the qualifying phase here and our victory was just one point apart.”

In the second half, everything changed.

“They entered the game and we fell a little bit, we knew that 10 goals difference was a fluke”.

UniCesumar improved and, with one minute remaining in the final, the score was 29 to 27, just two goals difference. In an attempt to seek a draw, the team from Maringá ended up making a mistake in the attack in the final seconds. Unip regained possession, worked well and scored the last goal with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Score: 30 to 27.
