Madrid Spain.- The former track and field athlete, Cuban sports legend, Alberto Juantorena, is in a delicate state of health.
“He has a history of a case of COVID-19 acquired abroad, from which complications consisting of a case of bronchopneumonia and cardiovascular decompensation have derived,” reported the official media on the Island.
The two-time world champion71, is cared for by a multidisciplinary team at the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine in Havana.
About the former athlete, related to the Cuban regime, he wrote in Twitter President Miguel Díaz-Canel: “40 years ago, when Alberto Juantorena “with his heart” and his legs had shaken Cuba with two Olympic titles, he repeated the feat in Habana’82. Today, he and the doctors are fighting for his life and Cuba hopes that they will also succeed. Cheers champion.”

Nicknamed as “The Horse” and “The elegant of the tracks”, Juantorena is the only athlete in history who has been Olympic champion of 400 and 800 meters. Both triumphs were achieved at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. He is also the only Cuban athlete who has managed to be a double champion in the same Olympics.
In the years 1976 and 1977 he was selected as the best athlete in the world by the International Sports Press Association.
He was vice president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) of Cuba between 1985 and 2013. In June 2012 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF).
