Renata Holmann, daughter of political prisoner and general manager of the newspaper La Prensa, Juan Lorenzo Holmann; denounced the “inhuman conditions” of the captivity of father in the cells of the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. In a message released by the “Nicas Libres Ya” campaign, the young woman said that she has not been able to have any kind of communication with her father since he was taken hostage of conscience by the Nicaraguan regime.
«My father Juan Lorenzo Holmann has been illegally detained in «El Chipote» for 474 days. Since his arrest, I have not been allowed to see him or communicate with him, which is a violation of my rights and the rights of my father,” he stressed.
During the confinement, Juan Lorenzo Holmann has developed new ailments due to the prison situation to which he is subjected. In addition, he had pre-existing illnesses such as high blood pressure and other severe heart problems, Renata Holmann said.
“The Ortega Murillo regime has not allowed him to see a doctor or receive the specialized medical care that he urgently needs. This is a violation of your rights. I ask you to join our cause and demand the release of my father and the more than 220 political prisoners in Nicaragua whose lives are at risk,” he said.

The opponent was arrested on August 14, 2021, after the dictatorship raided the facilities of La Prensa and took it over. Holmann was sentenced to nine years in prison for the alleged crime of money laundering.
The political prisoner remains in a 2 x 2 meter cell and during this year he has lost a lot of weight due to poor nutrition, his relatives have also denounced that the lack of medical attention persists.
On August 31, the regime showed Holmann before the official cameras. He looked thinner, with dark circles under his eyes and a lighter skin color. The photographs show the consequences that more than a year of confinement have left on the opponent.
A month later, on September 30, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures to Juan Lorenzo Holmann and his immediate family. The agency considers that both the political prisoner and his family “are in a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to his rights in Nicaragua.”
On November 9, the Inter-American Press Association (SIP) celebrated the election of two politically-imprisoned journalists to form its Board of Directors: Nicaraguan Juan Lorenzo Holmann and Guatemalan José Rubén Zamora.
In a statement, the agency highlighted that the election of journalists imprisoned in their respective countries is taking place for the first time in the 80-year history of the IAPA.
