The political prisoner Juan Lorenzo Holmann, general manager of the confiscated newspaper La Prensa, celebrates this Wednesday, December 14, 16 months captive in the cells of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), known as “El Chipote.”
In that center, the hostages of conscience are subjected to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, their relatives and local and international human rights organizations have denounced.
The family of Juan Lorenzo Holman has repeatedly expressed that they fear that he will die confined in “El Chipote” due to the inhumane conditions in which he is held captive.

«I live with the anguish of not being able to see him again, that he dies confined in the cells of El Chipote despite his innocence. I also fear for the safety of the rest of my family who is still in Nicaragua, a fear that has worsened now that the regime is ruthlessly targeting relatives of prisoners and opponents who have gone into exile,” said Renata Holmann, daughter by Juan Lorenzo at the end of October at the 78th General Assembly of the Inter-American Press Association (SIP).
During the confinement, Juan Lorenzo Holmann has developed new ailments due to the prison situation to which he is subjected. In addition, he has high blood pressure and other severe heart problems. The political prisoner remains in a 2 × 2 meter cell and during this year and four months he has lost a lot of weight due to poor nutrition.
In all these months of confinement, the Ortega Murillo regime has not allowed her to see a doctor or receive the specialized medical attention she urgently needs to stay alive. This refusal is a violation of their rights, their relatives have denounced on various occasions.
The manager of the newspaper La Prensa was arrested on August 14, 2021, after the dictatorship raided and confiscated the newspaper’s facilities. Juan Lorenzo Holmann was sentenced to nine years in prison for the alleged crime of money laundering and customs fraud.
