The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, would have called the court prosecutor, Juan Gómez, after broadcast the audio of Alejandro Astesiano’s statementformer head of his custody, in which it is revealed that the president knew of his criminal record and asked him for information about the former director of the National Police, Mario Layera.
As reported by journalist Eduardo Preve in his column the tapadita of M24, Gomez ordered a urgent investigation in the Prosecutor’s Office to determine if the audio left the institution.
From the Prosecutor’s Office they assure that Gómez learned of the audio from the press and ordered the investigation without the intervention of any person. The audio also reveals that Lacalle Pou knew that Astesiano had been prosecuted with prison in 2013. After the disclosure of the audio, at least three prosecutors, a coordinator and officials were called to testify in the investigation.
Anger in the government over the leak
Preve explained that the leak generated “anger in the Executive Tower and in the Prosecutor’s Office” and that investigations in the institution are common, but this is the first time that it has been carried out in cases of previous disclosures.
However, the conclusion is expected to be that there was no interference by tax officials in the audio leak.
In this regard, Gómez pointed out that he will not talk about the private conversations he has had and that it is not appropriate to talk about the subject.
This situation has generated a stir in the political arena and has put President Lacalle Pou and his relationship with Astesiano in the eye of the storm.
