Caldera indicated that there is a “false dilemma” about whether technical assistance from the CNE is allowed or not in the primaries, recalling that in other processes the support of the Electoral Power was obtained without any problem. He assured that, once the CNP is elected, the date of the primary elections will be defined.
The member of the Unitary Platform and the First Justice party Juan Carlos Caldera highlighted this Thursday, October 20, that the recently published framework regulation by the opposition coalition, which governs the primary process for the selection of a unitary candidate who faces President Nicolás Maduro in the 2024 elections, it leaves the door open for the National Primary Commission to request technical assistance from both national and international entities in order to optimize the process.
In an interview given to VPICaldera pointed out that there is a “false dilemma” regarding whether or not to allow technical assistance from the CNE, since he recalled that the electoral body has supported the opposition in other primary processes. In his opinion, counting on their assistance could optimize the organization and execution of this opposition election because they leverage the structure already established from the operational point of view that the Electoral Power has.
However, he said that it will be up to the National Primary Commission (CNP) to decide whether or not it will have technical assistance from the CNE. He clarified that the regulation also allows the possibility of requesting technical assistance from multilateral organizations abroad. “Hopefully we can count on the support of the UN, the OAS or the European Union,” he said.
He assured that, once the CNP is elected, the date of the primary elections will be defined; although he did say that from the political point of view it was debated when it would be convenient to carry them out because, he added, it will also depend on when the presidential elections are expected to be held; as well as other logistical aspects that require a preparation of at least eight months.

For this reason, he believes that the primaries will take place in 2023 and before the end of 2022 the date of their realization will be known; once the CNP was chosen from among more than 80 applicants.
Juan Carlos Caldera also spoke about voting abroad by insisting that there are at least 4.5 million Venezuelans abroad and that they have the right to exercise their right, but that the Executive prevents their participation due to legal provisions that were imposed by over civil rights. In his opinion, this is one of the challenges that the CNP must overcome.
He also spoke about the candidates who could be politically disqualified by saying that each party will be responsible for whoever applies, whether disqualified or not, in the primaries, since in the Unitary Platform no one is excluded.
The Unitary Platform announced, Wednesday October 19. the regulation that will allow the National Primary Commission, which has been called CP, to organize the process to elect the unitary candidate who will face the president, Nicolás Maduro, in the 2024 presidential elections.
Through a statement, the Platform highlighted that the regulations were approved after a “wide consultation process” with various political factors and various sectors of civil society; At the same time, he explained that it will serve as the basis for the body that will govern the primaries to dictate the regulations of the process.
