The National Day of struggles in defense of land reform, organized in all April by the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST), mobilized this year, according to the entity, 50 thousand people in virtually all federative units in the country.
In 2025, the mobilizations became more concentrated between April 1st and 17th. So far, according to the MST, there have been 55 actions at the national level, having as a motto “occupy for food Brazil”.
“In addition to the claim of the democratization of access to land against the liability of 145,000 families camping across the country, the demonstrations demarcate land reform and peasant family farming as structuring solutions to end hunger in the country,” says the movement.
The entity explains that, “even with the advances of the resumption of public policies important for the eradication of this social maze”, there are also more than 21 million Brazilian homes undergoing severe or moderate food insecurity.
Agrarian Reform and Democracy
“Even with new Lula administration announcements, since the beginning of their mandate less than 5,000 MST families have been based and many of these settlement processes have not yet been realized,” the note detailed by highlighting that land reform and popular mobilization are elements that strengthen democracy.
This year’s actions covered 47 municipalities located in 21 federative units. According to the organizers, in addition to acts and protests, 28 land occupations were made.
Two new camps were formed, and there were five occupations of public agencies linked to the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA).
The idea is to use these occupations as a form of pressure to speed up negotiations for expropriation of unproductive areas that do not comply with their social function.

National Agrarian Reform Program
MDA has as its goal incorporate at least 295 thousand new families into the National Agrarian Reform Program by 2026. According to the portfolio, the expectation is that this number will increase, with the possibility of inclusion of land of large debtors in some states.
