A group of journalists held an act this Wednesday (10) in the Chamber of Deputies against censorship and violent actions by legislative police officers committed this Tuesday (9).
Yesterday, during forcibly removed deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ) from the presidency of the Housethe TV Câmara signal, which broadcast the plenary session live, was immediately cut off and journalists, photographers, cameramen and press officers were removed by the Legislative Police from the Chamber Plenary.
Images and reports show brutal action by legislative police officers against reporters, cameramen and photographers who were trying to carry out their work. Some professionals needed medical attention due to attacks, which included pulling, elbowing and strong pushing.
The president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB) did not attend a meeting with a committee of press representatives to discuss the episode. He sent an advisor as a representative.
In a statement, the Brazilian Press Association reported this Wednesday that it will take legal action against the president of the Chamber for “violence committed by the Legislative Police, in the session on Tuesday (9), against journalists, parliamentarians and servants of the House and freedom of the press”.
The association will file a representation with the Attorney General’s Office for a crime of responsibility, affecting the right to freedom of the press and expression; with a complaint to the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the OAS Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and a representation to the Ethics Committee of the Chamber of Deputies for breach of parliamentary decorum and disciplinary infraction.
This Tuesday, after the episode, Motta stated, on a social network, that he determined to “investigate possible excesses in relation to press coverage”.
