Journalist Rory Branker, editor of The Patillawas released from prison on the afternoon of this Wednesday, February 4, after having been imprisoned for 11 months. He was held in the Tocorón prison, in the state of Aragua. The information was confirmed by the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) through its count in X.
Exactly, Branker was arrested on February 20, 2025 after being accused of alleged treason, financing of terrorism and conspiracy; charges for which he can be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
According to the media outlet for which he works, there were no public explanations as to why Rory Branker had not received precautionary measures, as had been given to other social communicators who remained imprisoned and were granted release, after Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly, announced a review process of cases of political prisoners.
Rory Branker’s only brother, who was in charge of bringing him food and being his support, died last year and the 80-year-old journalist’s mother was left “in enormous vulnerability.”
The NGO Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón has denounced that Rory Branker does not have access to a legal defense and lives in uncertainty.
