The Nicaraguan journalist Patricia Orozco received the international journalism award Julio Anguita Parradoan award created in 2007 to honor press men and women who defend freedom of expression and human rights.
The communicator received the recognition this Thursday, April 7, in Córdoba, Spain. the digital platform Own Agenda Nicaragua, directed by Orozco, extended congratulations. “We keep fighting, they will not give up on us! Long live the free press! Long live Nicaraguan journalists! Long live solidarity!”, expressed the media outlet.

The award was organized by the Andalusian Union of Journalists, with the support of the Córdoba City Council, the University of Córdoba, the School of Jewelery-Andalusian Employment Service and the Córdoba Jeweler Park.
The jury for the twenty-fifth prize stated that it was unanimously decided to award the distinction to Orozco, “valuing his extensive professional career in which he has always opted for committed and courageous journalism with a gender perspective, in defense of human rights, justice society and equality.
The colleague’s struggle to continue reporting on the situation in the country was also highlighted, which has earned her continuous attacks, harassment, threats and arrests that have led her into exile.
“Despite the threats, Patricia Orozco, who belonged to the Sandinista Front, has not stopped carrying out her critical and firm work with the values of democracy through the radio medium Onda Local, as well as later through the digital medium Agenda Propia Nicaragua.”

«At almost 65 years old, before the imminent arrest, Patricia Orozco has had to leave the country clandestinely risking her life. Her work constitutes an important contribution to the situation in Nicaragua, where freedom of expression was abolished long ago,” the jury added.
Victim of the Ortega regime
On June 1, 2021, the journalist attended a summons from the Prosecutor’s Office in the case of alleged money laundering against presidential candidate Cristiana Chamorro. Orozco said at that time that the regime “is crazy about independent journalism,” which is why they had interviewed her at the Public Ministry.
Orozco announced on August 24, 2021 that she went into exile “forced” by the repression, harassment, threats and brutal onslaught of the Ortega regime against the independent press in Nicaragua and “those who have made believe that it is a crime to inform and be informed, Contrary to what is established by the Political Constitution of Nicaragua.
She denounced that the Property Administration, at the service of the dictatorship, expropriated her from her home located in Reparto El Carmen, in the security perimeter of the house of the dictatorial couple Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
The Nicaraguan journalist is one of the dozens of press women and men who have been forced into exile to avoid being targeted by the current regime that continues its attack against independent journalism.
