The journalist Gaston Medina, who was murdered by ten bullets in Icahad reported irregularities in the Regional Government of Ica and in the municipality. In addition, he had reported the activity of extortionists. This was revealed by Peruvian Press Council (CPP) after condemning the incident and demanding that those responsible be identified.
The owner and director of Cadena Sur TV was attacked in broad daylight by a heavily armed individual traveling aboard a linear motorcycle. Although he was helped by neighbors, nothing could be done to save him. It happened when he was outside his home in the San Isidro urbanization, talking with a friend. His companion Edwin Uchuya was slightly injured.
The CPP reported that last year, the media outlet it ran was attacked.
IT HAS BEEN EIGHT YEARS SINCE A JOURNALIST HAS BEEN KILLED IN PERU
The National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP) informed Peru21 that eight years ago they did not kill a journalist in Peru. The last record is from 2017.
The ANP – which also confirmed that Medina reported irregularities by the Ica authorities – demanded that this murder be investigated diligently and expeditiously, the motive for the crime be determined and those responsible be brought to justice.
In an interview with this newspaper, Zuliana Lainez, president of the ANP, indicated that the Ica reporters are doing the work that the Police should do: “They have accessed videos from the security cameras, they have identified conclusive shots that capture the moment in which that Gastón Medina is murdered and you can see that the hitman doesn’t even get off the motorcycle, which rules out any indication that it was a robbery.”
Lainez said that the journalists have identified the license plate of the motorcycle and the ownership data of this license plate, which is in the name of a Venezuelan citizen.
“Reviewing the journalistic material of Gastón Medina we see that he interviewed an alleged hitman who had given up on carrying out the assignment of a person close to the current regional government who had asked him to disappear him and the vice-governor of the Regional Government of Ica. Gastón was a Frontal, critical, scathing journalist. That earned him animosity from various sectors, but he was doing his programs before they killed him, he did a morning show,” he explained.
The ANP demanded that the issue not be addressed as another incident of citizen insecurity but that the trail be followed that he was murdered for his journalistic work.
GASTON’S WIFE ASKS FOR JUSTICE
Meanwhile, Nelly Nathalie Caico, the communicator’s wife, called for justice. “He only wanted the best for our region,” he wrote on his Facebook.
The Supraprovincial Criminal Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Human Rights and Interculturality, based in Pisco, began the preliminary investigation against those responsible for the journalist’s death.
Reporters Without Borders condemned the murder of Gastón Medina and called for a quick and exhaustive investigation into the case without ruling out his journalistic work.
