The Venezuelan of Inter Miami Josef Martinez became the tenth all-time top scorer in the MLS with 101 targets, in a day in which the Seattle Sounders they achieved a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the Houston Dynamo field and maintained the leadership of the West ahead of the Los Angeles FCwhich has two fewer games.
The MLS day was also marked by the victory of the New York Red Bulls in the derby against New York City and by that of Dallas in the Texan duel against Austin, decided by a goal from the American, of Colombian origin, Jesús Ferreira.
After unlocking himself last week with a decisive double against Atlanta United, Josef Martínez scored another three-point goal and gave Inter Miami a 2-1 victory at home against the New England Revolution, which allowed him to reach tenth position in the MLS all-time top scorer table.
With the 1-1 scoreline, after Inter’s lead signed by David Ruiz, and the visitor’s equalizer scored by the Valencian Carles Gil, Martínez appeared again to decide the match. He took advantage of a comfortable assist from Ruiz in the center of the penalty area, settled the ball and beat the rival goalkeeper with a right cross shot.
He now has 101 MLS goals and is tied with Taylor Twellman for tenth in the all-time top scorers table. The standout leader is San José Earthquakes legend Chirs Wondolowski (171 goals), followed by Landon Donovan (145) and Kei Kamara (143).
Héctor Herrera, expelled in Houston
Victory worked for the Sounders, who beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 thanks to a goal in the 87th minute by Paul Rothrock, when the Texans played with nine men due to the expulsions of Moroccan Amine Bassi and Mexican Héctor Herrera.
The Sounders lead the West by two points over reigning champions LAFC, who thrashed 3-0 at Real Salt Lake and bounced back from last week’s loss to the Earthquakes. LAFC, León’s rival in the CONCACAF Champions League final, has two games less than the Sounders, so the first place in their conference is within reach.
Atlanta United continues to fall, which lost its third consecutive game by surrendering at home to Charlotte (1-3), before a double from Iraqi Justin Meram and a goal from Poland’s Karol Swiderski.
Red Bull win the New York derby
The Argentinian Thiago Almada was the starter in three quarters at Atlanta United and gave the assist, from a corner kick, for the header of the final 1-3 by Mexican Juan José Purata.
Among the other games, the Columbus Crew squandered a double lead and drew 2-2 against Orlando City under Colombian coach Óscar Pareja, while the New York Red Bulls went back to victory seven games later by winning 1-0 in the derby against New York City with a decisive target from the American Omir Fernández.
He won and convinced the Chicago Fire in the league debut of new coach Frank Koplas. With a great game from the Swiss Xherdan Shaqiri, he beat Saint Louis City, revelation of the year in the MLS, 1-0, to rediscover victory after four games in which he could only get two points. The goal of the German Rafael Czichos, from Shaqiri’s pass, relaunched a Fire that fired Hendrickson this week after a very negative management, in which he failed to give a clear idea of the game to his team.
