José María Balcázar says that he will evaluate granting safe passage to asylum seeker Betssy Chávez

The brand new president José María Balcázar He expressed this morning that he will evaluate granting safe passage to former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, convicted of the 2022 coup attempt and who has been holed up in the Mexican embassy since November of last year.

“I am going to study with the chancellor what her legal situation is (…) that has to be channeled through diplomacy, I do not think it is a priority issue and that it will be difficult to solve,” he declared to radio Exitosa.

Balcázar, elected last night by a majority of Congress after the censure of José Jerí, added that Chávez should stand upright although he considered that it is also the power of the asylum country to welcome the person they decide to protect.

“It is also not appropriate for a person to seek exile, what should be asked of Betssy Chávez is for her to face it and for the Judiciary to resolve her legal situation, but what I understand is that (asylum) is a power of the asylum power,” he said.

With Jerí, Peru chose to take the time to grant safe passage and even called an assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) to debate the use of this tool that has served to protect those investigated and sentenced on the continent.

Pedro Castillo’s former prime minister was sentenced to 11 years in prison in November 2025 for seeking the illegal closure of Congress and the reorganization of the justice system.

However, the Mexican government gave him asylum in its diplomatic residence located in Lima, where Chávez Chino has been staying for three months.

At the beginning of this month, Peru21 exposed the publications that the former minister made on her social networks campaigning for her mother Herminia Chino, who is running for the Senate with the Podemos party.

The report caused the Peruvian Foreign Ministry to send a note of protest to Mexico for allowing its asylum seeker to carry out a political campaign.
