José M. Murià: The greatest glory of PAN diplomacy

Jose M. Muria

eleven years of PAN government, plus six of his so-called PRI henchman, could not pass without leaving unfortunate traces in the Mexican Foreign Service, honorable and worthy in other times.

The 4T has respected the immovable nature of its membership career, but in general it has had the advantage of separating them from key positions, while in general they have tried not to be noticed. However, he had his moments of glory that we cannot ignore.

It is true that some recent appointments have not been happy, but it must be recognized that in general they agree with what the government expects of them, which has been more or less what is well established in article 89 of a document that many have not knowing well: the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States.

The basic principles of our foreign policy, which was developed and consolidated from the 30s of the last century, were fully incorporated in said Charter, during the splendid management of Bernardo Sepúlveda Amor at the head of the Mexican Foreign Ministry.

We have clear news and recent memory of the ultimate shame that Peña and Videgaray bequeathed us, expelling the North Korean ambassador with the primary purpose of lambasconing their buddies in the United States government. But it will almost be 20 years since the most ignominious feat of Mexican diplomacy that we know of.

It is not surprising that it has been led by Vicente Fox and his two consistent atlaters in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Jorge Castañeda Gutman and Luis Ernesto Derbez. The process began with one and ended with another, but of course it was the second who accumulated the greatest disgrace in the case. Without underestimating, of course, the ridiculous mountebank who was President.

It was about the delivery of the Spanish neo-Francoist authorities, headed by José María Aznar, six refugees Spaniards who had entered the country six or seven years before, sheltered by the government of Ernesto Zedillo, and three Mexican companions, with the worst accusations of terrorism impossible to sustain.

Both the rights of asylum and the obligatory protection of Mexican citizens were the reason for the greatest contempt, not to say so in the language of my neighborhood, on the part of the Mexican government, by the way, applauded full page, on July 20, 2003 by the newspaper Mural from Guadalajara and his buddy the Reform, of the then called Federal District. The note is curious that, in addition to foisting on the driven out the worst adjectives, none were properly supported. They were collaborators, yes, like many good Mexicans, with the Basque independence movement, supporting the old Mexican principle of the right of self-determination of peoples, but crimes of the common order, there were none attributable…

Note the inventory of what was seized from them, stated by the newspaper as if it were the most dangerous thing in the world: videos related to the activities of ETA and other organizations; Operation manuals; various documents related to said organization, bank receipts, etc.

We can well say that, thanks to Fox and Derbez, among others, Mexican diplomacy was covered in opprobrium.
