The president José Jerí reappeared hours after the Congress of the Republic debate the motions of censure against him for the clandestine meetings he held with Chinese businessmen and the hiring of women in the Government Palace after visiting him. In one interview for Panamericana TVthe president said that he made a mistake when attending a dinner with the businessman Zhihua Yang wearing a hood and a backpack.
“I recognize that I made the mistake of having put on a hood at a time that generated suspicion. That is my mistake and I admit it of having gone inappropriately to a dinner late at night,” he said. José Jerí.
“I can accept the mistake of having attended with clothing that I should not have worn; what I will never admit is having committed a crime. There was never any illegal content at that dinner,” he added.
José Jerí He reiterated that the meeting with businessman Yang had the objective of coordinating the preparations for the celebration of Peru-China Friendship Day, held on February 1. In this way, he rejected that his meeting responded to favors such as the purchase of security cameras for the ATU.
“I didn’t know that he sold cameras. I only knew about his private activity such as chifa and his market. I learned about other activities through the press. At no time did he directly or indirectly ask me for any type of favor for him or third parties,” said Jerí, who also indicated that if someone wanted to commit something illicit, they would not be accompanied by an escort or a minister.
José Jerí on the motions of censure: “The corresponding procedure is the vacancy”
José Jerí highlighted that the procedure to leave the presidential office is through a vacancy, because, according to his analysis, he took the oath as
“I was sworn in as president of the Republic under the Constitution. My origin is parliamentary, but I assumed office as president and the corresponding procedure, from the constitutional point of view, is that of vacancy. It will be Congress that makes a decision based on the Constitution and the laws. I greatly appeal to the good judgment that Congress has,” Jerí argued.
“Under the censure procedure, it is not my responsibility to go to Congress. Not because I do not want to, but because the procedure does not contemplate the right of defense. I appeal to the sense of responsibility not to continue contributing to a climate of instability that can indirectly influence an ongoing electoral process,” he added.
