The Popular Renewal bench sent a letter to the first vice president of Congress, Waldemar Cerrón, requesting that he urgently convene an Extraordinary Plenary Session to debate the motions against the president of the Republic, José Jerí. This – according to the document – in the face of “the illegal and arbitrary refusal” of the head of the Legislature, Fernando Rospigliosi.
The parliamentary group accuses the president of Parliament of not having the will to make this call and of having “outright rejected” the letter with the 79 signatures of legislators from different benches that supported this session, “under the pretext that there would only be 29 valid signatures”, so the minimum number of signatures required was not reached.
“In this regard, the Congress regulations do not require the validation of signatures as a requirement for the admission of the aforementioned letter, so it is evident that Congressman Rospigliosi’s attitude is due to the fact that he has publicly stated that he is against the debate on the motions of censure of the president in charge,” is detailed in the letter signed by the spokesperson of that bench, Esdras Medina.
“In any case, if there were doubts about the authenticity of any of the signatures, they should have diligently arranged for the competent body of the Congress of the republic to coordinate with each congressional office for their corresponding validation,” they indicate.
The bench points out that, given Rospigliosi’s refusal, it makes this request to Cerrón, under the protection of article 50 of Congress, which explains that, given the impossibility of the president of the Legislature, the call for the extraordinary plenary session is made by the first vice president. Cerrón belongs to the Peru Libre bench that is in favor of Jeri’s vacancy.
