José Jerí: “My main enemies are in the prisons”

José Jerí: “My main enemies are in the prisons”

During these turbulent days, President José Jerí will be able to call the conferences that he sees fit, but he knows well that when he has to face the press, he will have to continue answering about his unofficial meetings with Chinese businessmen. Their explanations have been as unclear as the figures on the fight against crime in states of emergency offered this last Thursday at the Government Palace. The president has not escaped the national issue and has indicated that he hopes that all the other videos that are already announced about more unregistered meetings with Chinese businessmen will be disseminated to “have many more indications of who is behind it and what the link and underlying interest is.”

“I say again, it is becoming much clearer to me that those who are in the prisons and who have friends outside, have some interest in the authority not continuing to carry out searches in the prisons. There is a logical interest in it,” the president suspected.

“My main enemies are in the prisons,” said Jerí, who claims that because of these operations in the prisons they see him as a “target.” “And they have friends outside,” said the head of state, reiterating that “there was no illicit content” in his meetings with Chinese businessmen.

The president indicated that he is a president who, despite his mistakes, successes and everything they may say, is committed to what he offered to do: combat insecurity and guarantee a transparent and impartial electoral process. “I continue along that line, I am not going to let myself be intimidated,” he said in the Palace.

“They have a president who, despite his mistakes, successes and everything they may say, is committed to what he offered to do: combat insecurity and guarantee a transparent and impartial electoral process. I continue in that line, I am not going to let myself be intimidated, and I hope in three months to be able to present much better results than those I am presenting on behalf of the government,” he said.

Regarding the figures for the fight against crime in states of emergency, he maintained that the indicators released this Thursday, prepared with the support of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), constitute an incentive, as they show that measures such as joint patrol operations, interventions in penitentiary centers and other strategies are beginning to show concrete effects.

“The Executive assured that it was going to prevail in this fight and today hope and conviction are emerging again that this is possible. It is not about perceptions, but about objective information: figures and statistics that have been rigorously evaluated, processed and reviewed by the INEI, following the usual protocols, and that now, finally, we can make known to the citizens,” said the head of state.
