José Jerí: More than 50% of crimes committed in Peru are registered in Lima

President José Jerí reported that more than 50% of the crimes committed in the country are recorded in Lima, which is why the Government has decided to concentrate its efforts on combating crime in the capital and Callao, where more than 11 million people live.

He pointed out that the new measures included in the state of emergency will allow for more firm action against organized crime, extortion and common crimes.

The president highlighted that the approved provisions are based on an exhaustive analysis and the principle of reality, which will provide the State with more effective tools and protocols to confront insecurity. Jerí called on the high command, officers and non-commissioned officers of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) to redouble their commitment in this fight.

“The Government will not allow crime to gain ground. We are all going to win this war together,” he stated, urging mayors, police, security forces, Armed Forces and citizens to join forces in favor of security.

The head of state led a police operation in Cercado de Lima and Santa Anita to reinforce the presence of law enforcement in critical areas.

The Presidency of the Council of Ministers explained that among the new actions is the creation of the Unified Operational Coordination Command (CCO), chaired by the commander general of the PNP, in addition to the use of satellite images, drones and public and private video surveillance cameras. Likewise, controls in prisons will be intensified, with restrictions on visits, transfer of dangerous inmates and rotation of prison staff.

Finally, The Government will grant incentives and recognition to agents who stand out in the fight against crime.

Jerí announced that the national security strategy will be progressively expanded to other regions of the country, where organized crime and common crimes also represent a growing threat to the population.
