The president of the republic, José Jeríwas recognized this Monday as supreme head of the Armed forces and the National Police of Peru. The ceremony took place at Army Headquarters.
The president was decorated with the Military Order of Ayacucho in the degree of Grand Cross. “I receive it as an expression of duty, loyalty and absolute service to our country,” he said during his speech.
The head of state highlighted the example of Francisco Bolognesi, Miguel Grau, and José Avelardo Quiñones. “They taught us that honor does not give up, that one’s life is given for Peru and that the country is always above any personal interest,” he said.
Jerí considered that the Armed Forces and the National Police “have always been pillars in the most difficult moments of our history”, such as during the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, and highlighted that they were “decisive” in defending the constitutional order.
“May the example of our heroes (…) be the foundation of every action, the spirit of every mission and the reason for every sacrifice,” he emphasized.
The president pointed out that the defense of Peru requires modernization “to modernize is to equip, train, protect and dignify those who wear the uniform.”
The president warned that organized crime and narcoterrorism hit families and undermine national security. “The State will never be a spectator. We have gone from defensive to offensive,” he said.
“They are not going to break us and we will not rest until we defeat them. We have done it before and now we can do it again,” he stated.
The head of state was accompanied by the Minister of the Interior, Vicente Tiburcio, and the Minister of Defense, César Díaz Peche.
