President José Jerí announced that before midnight the state of emergency in Tacna will be approved, published and in force, in order to reinforce security on the border with Chile in the face of the increase in attempts at irregular entry.
He noted that this will be the first border area to be declared an emergency for reasons of irregular migration and citizen security.
The provision responds to the presence of dozens of people who, after being in an irregular situation in Chile, seek to cross into Peruvian territory to return to their countries of origin, but have been detained by the National Police. At the same time, the Peruvian and Chilean Governments They agreed to create a binational committee to jointly address this problem.
Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela reiterated that Peru will not allow irregular entry because its capacities are “full,” so immigration laws will be strictly applied.
He added that he has spoken with international organizations such as UNHCR and the IOM, to whom he reaffirmed the commitment to confront this situation while respecting the principles of humanitarian law.
Today, before 12 AM, the state of emergency in Tacna will be approved, published and in force to reinforce security on our borders. This will be the first of our borders to be declared an emergency for reasons of irregular migration and citizen security.
