José Jerí announces that this January 18 the Law against extortion and hitmen will come into force

The President of the Republic, José Jeríexplained that the law 32490which incorporates extraordinary measures to confront the extortion and hitmenwill be in force from Sunday, January 18, after its publication in the official newspaper El Peruano and after the approval of the regulation by the Council of Ministers.

The rule responds to growing social pressure due to insecurity in public and freight transportation, a sector that has reported multiple attacks and threats by criminal groups.

The president assured that the promulgation of the law It is part of a broader action by the Executive to strengthen the state response to organized crime and improve the feeling of citizen security.

The Government emphasized that the entry into force of the law It involves not only sanctions but also instruments to dismantle the networks behind these criminal practices that affect both drivers and merchants. However, Jerí continues without commenting on the so-called pro-crime laws approved by Congress. The head of state has assured on several occasions that such norms do not exist and that it is an adjective given by citizens.

What measures does the law introduce against extortion and contract killings?

The law 32490 incorporates the creation of the Interinstitutional Group against extortion and the hitman (GIES), a specialized team made up of police, prosecutors and judges who will work under a special security regime to expedite the investigation and prosecution of these crimes.

This unit seeks to professionalize and centralize the State’s action against the threats faced by transporters, with periodic reliability tests for its members and direct coordination between key institutions.

Furthermore, the law It includes financial intelligence mechanisms to track extortion payments made through digital platforms or bank accounts, which will make it easier to identify and block money flows linked to these illicit activities.
