José Daniel Ferrer remains half-naked, in a punishment cell and without the right to telephone calls

MIAMI, United States. – The family of José Daniel Ferrer, leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), denounced this Tuesday the extreme conditions in which the opponent, imprisoned in the Mar Verde prison, in Santiago de Cuba, finds himself.

In a facebook postk, his sister, Ana Belkis Ferrer, said that “the dictatorship of Raúl Castro and Díaz-Canel” had allowed him only “10 scant minutes [de visita] in the corridor next to the punishment cell where they keep him buried alive and dying slowly for a year and two months.

“José Daniel is still half-naked, only in his underpants, his entire body covered in bites from aggressive and dangerous mosquitoes, with the same symptoms that he began to present days after being confined in such a monstrous and infernal place where they torture him both physically and psychologically, applying constant and permanent sonic radiation, and without medical attention”, denounced Ana Belkis.

The also opposition member recalled that Ferrer has been “four months and six days without his clothes, only in his underpants”, and that the prison authorities do not allow him to use the telephone, not even to communicate with his family.

“They give him dirty water to drink and [está] feeding only on the food bag that is allowed every 45 long days, a bag that today he refused to receive, alleging that when the little food that remains from the previous bag runs out, he will go on a hunger strike until the last consequences”, Ana Belkis warned.

Recently, Ferrer’s wife, Nelva Ismaray Ortega, also denounced that the opposition leader was isolated in a punishment cell “under inhuman, cruel and degrading conditions, with his basic pathologies and other symptoms associated with those dungeons, technologically prepared to torture him.”

“Without a doubt, the Castro-Canel dictatorship, despite burying him alive and slowly killing him, does not stop fearing a man, a simple man, for his unwavering firmness,” Ortega added.

Ferrer has been detained since July 11, 2021 for trying to access the place where popular protests were taking place in his province. A month later, he had a four-year prison sentence that he had been serving since 2020 in house arrest revoked.
