José Cueto confirms that spy microphones were found in the Foreign Ministry

The head of the Congressional Intelligence Commission, José Cueto Aserviconfirmed that spy microphones were found in the chancellor’s office, as revealed Peru21but indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not do more to clarify who installed this equipment.

This newspaper reported that in August 2021, when the government of coup leader Pedro Castillo began, the then minister Óscar Maúrtua found active microphones, which worked for spying, under his desk.

“When I drop the paper, I bend down and see a whole frame (of microphones), a little structure, and the complaint was made (…) I saw it with these eyes. They had made a frame,” Maúrtua insisted.

The diplomat took over as Castillo’s chancellor after the departure of former guerrilla Héctor Béjar, who lasted only 20 days in the position because he had disputes with the Peruvian Navy.

In this regard, Cueto said that, after the exposure of this newspaper, the National Intelligence Directorate (DINI) showed him the report it made at that time and the photos they took of the electronic devices found that, according to him, were not modern.

“They were microphones from God knows what era, because that type is no longer used, with cables attached (to the floor),” he said.

Cueto explained that the Foreign Ministry should have taken steps to clarify how these devices were installed. However, strangely there was no interest in clarifying the facts.

“The DINI of that time became aware and the security system of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs captured those devices, but from there they disappeared (…) in the internal security system of the Foreign Ministry they took action, saw and left it there,” he said.

This newspaper contacted today’s Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela to find out why in his sector, in that period of time, this serious case was archived.

De Zela replied that he is abroad and that upon his arrival he will make the corresponding inquiries.
