Paraguayan coach José Saturnino Cardozo will play his first final in Guatemala this Thursday when his team, Municipal, hosts Comunicaciones in the local soccer classic, which will define the champion of the Clausura 2022 tournament.
The first leg of the final of the contest will take place this Thursday at the El Trébol stadium in Guatemala City, where Municipal plays as a local, while the second leg is scheduled for next Sunday at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores stadium.
Although with some difficulties during the qualifying phase, Cardozo took Municipal to the final and will now face Communications, its historic rival, under the command of Uruguayan coach William Coito Olivera.
Municipal eliminated Guastatoya in the semifinals, while Comunicaciones left Malacateco, current Guatemalan soccer champion, behind.
Cardozo is looking to lift his first cup at the helm of Municipal and to be the second Paraguayan in this century to lead the Guatemala City team to the title, as his colleague and compatriot, Éver Hugo Almeida, did in 2001.
Communications and Municipal are the two most popular and winning teams in Guatemalan soccer, with 30 and 31 Major League titles in their showcases, respectively.
Cardozo was hired by Municipal a year ago and in his first tournament, Apertura 2021, he succumbed in the semifinals precisely against Communications.
