uring 2022, governorships were renewed in six states of the Republic, where more than 5 million people voted. In four of them (Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo and Tamaulipas), the victory went to Morena and his allies, while in Aguascalientes the PAN was the winner and in Durango, the PRI. Contrary to what had been predicted, Morena did not obtain the six governorships and each political force achieved favorable results. These elections did not have relevant challenges and they developed calmly thanks to the collaboration of the institutions in charge of monitoring them.
In 2023, the state of Mexico and Coahuila will renew their governorships and, in the second, their local Congress. During this process, close to 2 million people will be able to vote in Coahuila, while in the state of Mexico just over 12 million, this being the largest electoral registry in the country.
Eight political parties will compete in the Edomex election, and there will be at least two alliances. Although they have not yet been formally defined, the possible coalitions would be Morena, PT and PVEM, as well as PAN, PRI and PRD, so Movimiento Ciudadano and Nueva Alianza would go on their own.
Although in Coahuila the leaders of the PAN, PRI and PRD have talked to join an alliance, so far they have not defined their candidate, while Morena has already appointed a regional coordinator to defend the vote and who will be her candidate.
The results of these elections will be decisive for the 2024 federal election, since the state of Mexico, the entity with the largest number of inhabitants in the country, is at stake.
This vote will be crucial for the party that ruled the country for more than 70 years and also for Morena to consolidate itself as the entity with the largest national population and which, of course, will be of great importance in the presidential elections.
However, the determining factor for voters by 2024 will be the real or apparent results that are perceived from the government headed by Morena. Improvements in the health system and living conditions, as well as the maintenance of economic stability and that there are no corruption scandals. These factors will ultimately influence the decision of citizens.
