José Fernando García Garzón, a 33-year-old man, had been hospitalised for several months. Despite his delicate condition, García clung to life in the hope of being able to say goodbye to his faithful companion, ‘Tommy’. The efforts of the doctors allowed Tommy, a dog who had been by his side for 12 years, to enter the intensive care unit for a final farewell.

“He said his last goodbye to my child. My child was able to go in peace, to say goodbye and to give him his last caress, because Tommy was part of the family,” said Elizabeth Garzón, the deceased young man’s mother, in statements to Noticias Caracol. This gesture of humanity and empathy on the part of the medical staff underlines the deep connection between human beings and their pets.

Although José Fernando had received palliative sedation, the doctors were perplexed because he was still not resting in peace. It was at that moment that the family decided to take Tommy to the clinic. “We took the dog out; when we were in the elevator, my mother was carrying the dog and the dog cried a lot, which gave us a hunch that perhaps this was what my brother was missing,” explained the young man’s sister. After the emotional farewell, the dog returned home and the young man died 20 minutes later.

This act of farewell reflects the deep bond that can form between humans and their pets, a bond that transcended even the end of life for José Fernando García Garzón and his dear friend Tommy. The story has resonated deeply and highlighted the importance of the emotional connection we share with our animals, who often become inseparable members of our family.
