Jorge Zapata, president of Confiep: 'Premier Álvarez should stay'

The president of the ConfiepJorge Zapata, considered that the political crisis that once again hits the country is a problem that considerably affects the national economy due to the uncertainty it generates in investors, and that the situation could be much worse if it were not for the monetary stability that the Central Reserve Bank has maintained.

“Investors, the market, already assume that Peru is very politically unstable and that instability evidently prevents our growth, investments, and bets on the country from being greater,” said Zapata in an interview for Perú21 TV.

“Sometimes it is said that we walk on separate ropes because the economy goes one way and politics goes the other, but it is not true. What happens is that we have such macroeconomic strength, we have a Central Reserve Bank that has done its job very well, the terms of trade that today favor Peru are also extraordinary, historic, and the potential that Peruvian production has means that investments in production do not stop and we continue growing at three 3.2%. However, if we had political stability and greater predictability, that growth could easily double,” he added.

Zapata recognized the chaotic situation in which the country has found itself “for 10 years” which leads him to reflect on the urgent need for a reform of the electoral system and political parties.

Regarding the replacement of José Jerí, the manager considered that an impeccable, honest and consensus person should be sought, but considered that the cabinet, and with it, Premier Ernesto Álvarez, should be maintained for the few remaining months of this government.

“There is not much more to do, in a short time and with the electoral process already underway. But we need a coherent person, with national consensus, who dialogues, who seeks consensus and above all impeccable from an ethical point of view… Another commitment of the new president is that he should maintain the structure that is set up, because imagine that we start looking for ministers. I do not think there are too many people willing to accept the positions at this moment and we could spend several days or weeks looking for ministers and that also creates instability, when The cabinet that is formed at this moment has good ministers, it has ministers who are doing things well and ministers who are respectable,” said Zapata.

“I would consider so [Ernesto Álvarez debería continuar]. Of course, the new president is going to evaluate him, but he is a person who is prepared and who has no questions. “I think that his proposals and his handling of the premiership in these months have been appropriate,” he added.

As is known, the Congress of the Republic approved with 75 votes in favor, 24 against and 3 abstentions, the motions of censure against José Jerí, for which he was immediately removed from the position of president and had to leave the Government Palace.

Jerí is leaving office amid questions about the so-called ‘Chifagate’ case in which the then president met with Chinese businessmen informally in a chifa in the capital, in addition to a series of irregular hiring of young ladies in positions of trust after spending the night in the Government Palace.
