Jorge ‘Toto’ Da Silveira, Uruguayan radio institution, died

Today, Uruguayan sports journalism and soccer lovers dress in mourning to bid farewell to an unforgettable figure: Jorge “Toto” Da Silveiraone of the most recognized figures of sports journalism in Uruguay, he left us this Tuesday his 79 years of ageafter facing complications derived from a long illness, had to be admitted more than a month ago.

In the last days, his state of health deteriorated rapidly and medical treatments did not offer much of a chance. “He left in peace”, say those close to him. For 62 years, this communicator practiced his profession in the media, starting at Radio Sarandí at the age of 17. In addition, he stood out as a renowned commentator on the channels 4, 10 and 5.

With a direct, frontal and courageous style, Da Silveira contributed to the growth of the role of commentators in general. Under his leadership, the call arose “Clan 10” on Radio Ariel, a young journalistic team that revolutionized sports broadcasts. Next to Amadeo Ottatisummoned the renowned rapporteur Víctor Hugo Morales, as well as Alberto Kesman and Carlos Muñozamong other journalists who later became benchmarks for a new generation in the field of sports communication.

The departure of Jorge “Toto” Da Silveira leaves a void in Uruguayan sports journalism. His commitment, passion and contribution to the development of this profession remain etched in history. His voice was heard and resonated in the hearts of sports fans, who will remember him as a legend of soccer storytelling and analysis.
