The debate
At the beginning of the session this Thursday, January 5, the deputy Grecia Colmenares, from the state of Táchira, served as accidental secretary during the installation of the new Board of Directors, article 194 of the Magna Carta and the internal regulations and debates of the AN
After having verified the quorum, the secretary and the director of debates asked those present for their approval to proceed with the election of the new Board of Directors for the period 2023-2024.
Subsequently, on instructions from the director of the debate, Deputy Jorge Rodríguez, the accidental secretary read article 194 of the Magna Carta and the articles. 6,7 and 8 Internal Regulations and Debates of the National Assembly.
Deputy Diosdado Cabello, representing the Bloque de la Patria, took the floor and after highlighting the work of the National Assembly during this last period, at the beginning of his speech he stressed: “I have no doubt that I give 100 points to this National Assembly, my appreciation to deputies after the attacks against our country. This National Assembly led by Jorge Rodríguez has had representation at the international level.
He indicated that the Legislative Branch is “a power represented by all the deputies, there is no other space, beyond those who love to live on fantasies and dreams. Here the right to express oneself is respected.
He added that within the National Assembly “political and public debate takes place, without any type of tapestry.”
After acknowledging the progress and merits of the outgoing Board of Directors before the national and international stages, Cabello said: “Just as we have done in other years, we make a proposal to the country for the Board of Directors.”
In this sense, he proposed for the presidency the current deputy Jorge Rodríguez, who holds the position of President of Parliament.
“I propose for the presidency that Deputy Jorge Rodríguez continue to fulfill his functions, who must be recognized for his effort, work, dedication, patience, and tolerance,” he emphasized.
He stressed that «Jorge Rodríguez has been at the forefront of the national dialogue and has also participated. This AN has gained its historical figuration after the period occupied by the oppositionists.
As for the first vice-presidency, compañero Pedro Infante is proposed, and for the second vice-presidency, América Pérez.
Likewise, he thanked two colleagues Iris Varela and Vanessa Montero “for the work they have done and continue to do, thank you very much. This is our proposal to lead the Bolivarian National Assembly.
For his part, Deputy Pedro Carreño highlighted the fact that the country, “in the midst of the vicissitudes and aggressions, in the midst of the systematic and recurring attacks of the reactionary right, of the historical enemies of the national liberation processes of our people”, has sufficient integrity and sufficient maturity to settle their differences.
He stressed that the current AN has worked to retake the institutionality and constitutionality of Parliament, and that is its strength. “We don’t need imperialism to recognize us. We are interested in the fact that it is the people who recognize us, “he said.
In this sense, he pointed out as an example of this the vote for the election of the National Assembly, in which both the Revolution proposes and the opposition, but decides, as it should be in a democracy, the majority.
“It is an example of how a country works in a democracy, with respect and tolerance.”
Likewise, Carreño highlighted that the 2015-2020 National Assembly became a kind of imperial aircraft carrier to attack the homeland, loot the property and assets of the Republic, but also work against the political stability of the country, with the intention of lay hands on national wealth and place it at the service of imperialism.
In this regard, he said that the greatest strength of parliament is having resumed “institutionality, legality, constitutionality and the rule of law.”
Likewise, he said he understood why imperialism does not recognize us. “We do not need you to recognize us, with the recognition of the Venezuelan people we have enough.”
“Of course he will not recognize us, because of our nationalist position and based on the supreme interests of the country.”
Opposition proposals
For the opposition bench it was the turn of deputy Luis Augusto Romero to present a second option. In his speech, Deputy Romero highlighted the responsibility assumed by the deputies of the National Assembly to “legislate based on national interests, the interests of the Venezuelan people.” In this regard, he particularly highlighted the responsibility they assumed to dismantle the device of violence activated in the country two years ago.
«This opposition is a democratic, nationalist opposition and deeply committed to the interest of the country. This is an opposition that does not receive lines from any capital in the world, from any foreign interest,” said the deputy when presenting the proposal of the opposition sector to the Board of Directors of the AN.
In this way, for the presidency of the National Assembly he proposed deputy Anyeli Tamayo, whom he highlighted as an expression of young leadership. For the first Vice Presidency he proposed Deputy Alfonso Campos, while for the second Vice Presidency he proposed the name of Deputy Miguel Salazar de Copei.
