Jorge Rodríguez: amnesty process reviews 1,557 requests from prisoners

The president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, assured that the mechanism is in “full development” and specified that 1,557 amnesty requests corresponding to people deprived of liberty are currently being reviewed, as well as 11 thousand requests linked to alternative measures for deprivation of liberty.

The president of the National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, reported this Saturday that the application process of the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence is advancing with releases and review of cases with substitute measures for freedom.

At a press conference, the parliamentarian assured that the mechanism is in “full development” and specified that 1,557 amnesty requests corresponding to people deprived of liberty are currently being reviewed, as well as 11 thousand requests linked to alternative measures for deprivation of liberty.

Rodríguez explained that the first detention centers attended have been Zone 7 of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) and El Helicoide, where – as he indicated – releases have already occurred.

“Until yesterday we had 405 requests from people deprived of liberty. As of today, 1,152 requests have been made. In total, 1,557 are being attended to immediately,” said the deputy, who also notified the release of hundreds of people in the last few hours.

Likewise, he explained that cases related to the lifting of alternative measures are being evaluated, including the regime of appearance in court and house arrest, which – according to him – affect about 11 thousand people.

“He who believes in dialogue for the construction of peace makes a contribution where peace is lasting, where we all respect each other and can discuss differences without resorting to hatred or polarization,” said Rodríguez when referring to the spirit of the regulations.

The parliamentarian maintained that the periods for reviewing cases are “immediate” and that requests and releases are processed “in real time.” However, he recalled that the law also contemplates the recognition and care of victims of political violence.

“It establishes a step so that the mistakes of the past do not occur again,” he concluded.

The application of the Amnesty Law has generated expectations and questions in different sectors, especially regarding the criteria for inclusion and exclusion of cases, as well as the speed of the judicial review process.
