What will Expomina bring us this year?

We will have the APEC Mining Ministers’ Meeting; there will be a great discussion. We will also have a Conference of Mining Ministers of the Americas, that is, we will bring together a large number of ministers from the sector, which has not happened in Peru or in any event in the world. Additionally, we will have more than 180 talks, conferences, foreign exhibitors and specialists. There will be a very large exhibition of machinery and various products and services.

What is the main problem facing mining?

All projects that are already ready should be implemented and mining should not be politicized. Mining should not be politicized because it is important that we respect it and that all Peruvians defend it. If we have the resources buried, why not extract them to help reduce poverty and improve infrastructure?

Is it important, then, to promote large projects, such as Tía María?

In its first phase, Tía María will create 9,000 jobs, and not minimum wage ones. It will help a lot with the development of the area; there are no negative points. Unfortunately, for anti-mining NGOs it is a business to be against emblematic projects for the country. The Government can carry out projects with the money generated by the mining company.

Do you feel that there is more persecution of legal mining than illegal mining?

Neither government has been able to offer a tempting proposal to those who want to formalize. Illegal mining is handling a lot of money and is also becoming more radical, more violent. Reinfo has not been successful, so it should not be expanded, but what must be done is to separate the wheat from the chaff and give the conditions to those who want to be formal.
