Sources close to the elected president informed Underlined that, although it has not yet been made official, Díaz is emerging as the next pro-secretary of the Presidency in the new government.
Díaz accompanies Deputy Alejandro Sánchez, designated as future Secretary of the Presidency, in the transition team. Sánchez was confirmed in this position by Orsi on Wednesday, after the meeting he held with President Luis Lacalle Pou.
In statements made this Thursday from the Hampton Hotel, in the Carrasco Airport area, where Orsi set up the transition headquarters, the president-elect highlighted the incorporation of Díaz, noting that “he lends a great hand in the issues he handles and also with the roughness that is needed.”
Key career and links with Orsi
Jorge Díaz, who resigned from the Attorney General’s Office three years ago to practice as a private attorney, has an outstanding career in the legal field. As Court prosecutor, he led the reform of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPP), which since 2017 gives prosecutors the direction of criminal investigations.
In his role as a lawyer, he represented Yamandú Orsi in the complaint filed at the beginning of the year by a trans woman against the then Broad Front candidate. The complaint was filed when it was found to be false, and the complainant was charged.
In addition, Díaz was a defender of former Vice Chancellor Carolina Ache (Colorado Party) in the investigation into the granting of a passport to drug trafficker Sebastián Marset, as well as in the case related to the destruction of documents linked to the case.
With this incorporation, the Orsi team continues to define the figures that will occupy key roles in the next government, marking a focus on experience and management of strategic areas.
