Jochi Gómez “the invisible hand” who has evaded justice for more than a decade

Jochi Gómez «la mano invisible» que ha esquivado a la justicia hace más de una década

José Ángel Gómez Canaán, better known in the arena as Jochi Gómez, has been the figure that in recent days has sparked questions, mysteries and intrigue to different sectors of Dominican society, on this occasion due to his connection to the “shady contract” for the control of the traffic lights of the National District, an agreement that was held with the Institute of Traffic and Land Transportation in 2023.

Gómez, who was arrested this Tuesday after appearing before the Attorney General’s Office for the agreement, previously justified its execution by saying that it practically had the consent of the highest levels of the State.

The irregularities of the agreement detected by several institutions exploded in the hands of the current director of Intrant, Milton Morrison, who blamed Transcore Latam, the company led by Gómez, for sabotaging the traffic light network, after causing a “blackout” in the lights.

This persecution and subsequent arrest was accelerated after the complaint made by the former president, Leonel Fernández, who blamed the company for “attacking national security” through espionage through surveillance cameras placed on the promising “smart” traffic lights. .

Other Scandals

This has not been the first time that Gómez has been linked to serious technological crimes.
In 2020, he was accused by the followers of Leonel Fernández, at that time he was the highest authority of the Dominican Liberation Party and candidate for the presidency of the Republic, of having perpetrated the alleged “fraud” in the internal affairs of that party, which he revealed as winner to former Minister of Public Works, Gonzalo Castillo.

Despite the delicate accusations and investigation process, Gómez Canaán emerged from the process unscathed.

In 2012, the “invisible Gómez,” as he is also known, was accused of blackmail, extortion, and alleged hacking of several email accounts of various political and business figures.

On that occasion, the Public Ministry accused the businessman of collaborating with international hackers, especially from India and Vietnam, to obtain keys to those accounts, achieving a 3-month arrest for Gómez as a measure of coercion, which would later be reduced with his conditional release. in that same year.

Gómez is currently imprisoned along with the former director of INTRANT, Hugo Beras in the jail of the National District Prosecutor’s Office awaiting a formal accusation by the Public Ministry.
