The secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, announced that some 250,000,000 pesos will be allocated to extend the validity of the Labor Opportunity program. In addition, 1,200 vacancies will be redistributed to the departments with the highest unemployment rate: Río Negro, Paysandú and Salto. The program will be implemented again in 2023, but with different characteristics, which will be defined together with the Congress of Mayors.
The announcement was made at a press conference in the Executive Tower. Along with Delgado, were the president of the Congress of Mayors (CI) and mayor of Florida, Guillermo López; the mayor of Rivera, Richard Sander, and the mayor of Salto, Andrés Lima.
The Labor Opportunity program, also known as Jornales Solidarios, will extend its validity for two months. The second edition was scheduled to end on October 31, but at the proposal of the Congress of Mayors, the Executive Power decided to extend it.
Delgado reported that the proposal received the endorsement of the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, and that work is being done on the preparation of a bill so that it can be discussed and approved by Parliament in the first week of November. The initiative will allocate around 250,000,000 pesos to carry out the extension, he explained.
Likewise, the Executive Branch proposed that some 1,200 unfulfilled quotas be reassigned in equal parts to those departments with the highest level of unemployment: Paysandú, Río Negro and Salto. These places are in a particular situation, because they border with Argentina. The activity there is affected by the difference in prices with the neighboring country.
The program will be developed again in 2023, but will present different characteristics than the current ones. Delgado explained that a work environment will be formed between the Executive Branch and the Congress of Mayors to redesign it based on the evaluation of the first two editions.
The representatives of the aforementioned congress valued the speed with which the national government acted to take the measure. They also highlighted that there is a consensus on the success of the implementation. In this regard, López pointed out that, according to the first evaluation, 25% of the participants manage to enter the labor market again, with more stable and long-term solutions. Presidency
