JNE: 2026 electoral schedule will not be affected by the political situation

The president of the National Election Jury (JNE), the supreme magistrate Roberto Burneo Bermejoassured that the 2026 electoral schedule, which contains the milestone dates before the elections on April 12 of next year in which we will elect a new president, two vice presidents, the members of the bicameral Congress and the members of the Andean Parliament, will not be affected by the political situation.

The statement was made this afternoon from the Government Palace, where minutes before he met with the president José Jeríwho acceded to Pizarro’s chair on October 10 after the vacancy unanimously approved by Congress against Dina Boluarte. Since there are no vice presidents to succeed her in office, the Constitution states that it is the head of the Board of Directors of Parliament who assumes the functions of the Executive.

After this, on October 15, a massive march was held that, unfortunately, led to acts of violence by the protesters and a police repression to control the crowds that left one person dead and several civilians and police officers injured.

Jerí, during his inauguration speech, promised to combat crime in the short period that he will govern the country, and to strictly comply with the electoral calendar, approved and published at the beginning of April of this year by the JNE.

In this context, the head of state summoned the highest authorities of the electoral entities, JNE, National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) and National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec), today in the Government Palace in order that next year’s elections “are safe and guarantee free citizen expression.”

Burneo Bermejo attended the meeting, along with the head of the ONPE, Piero Corvetto, and the head of Reniec, Carmen Velarde.

Burneo mentioned to the media who spoke with President Jerí “issues related to the budget necessary for the system to be able to meet this great objective (the 2026 elections) and issues related to security around the organization of the processes.”

On the other hand, Corvetti reiterated that digital voting is a “pilot project” designed to be used in 2026 by members of the Armed Forces and the National Police.

“In this process, ONPE has delivered the software for a first audit and inspection of the JNE. We have also hired an American company with experience in digital voting. We hope to sign the contract this week. When we have the results of the inspection of the JNE and the audit that we have hired, in December of this year, we could be in a position to confirm or not the use of digital voting in the 2026 elections,” he stated.

The first presidential round is scheduled to be held on April 12 of next year. The eventual second round would take place on June 7. The new president would assume duties during National Holidays.
