A jury made up of José María Vitier, María Elena Vinueza, Germán Velazco, Manolito Simonet and chaired by Maestra Digna Guerra decided to award today in Havana the 2022 National Music Prize to the guitarist, composer and conductor Jesús Ortega.
“We took into account the extraordinary trajectory of the maestro, who throughout his prolific life has contributed in dissimilar spaces of creation, for Cuban music to have a high degree of recognition not only in the field of concert music, but also also with pieces for film production,” Vinueza said at a press conference in the Cuban capital.
Ortega is considered one of the pillars of the Cuban guitar school, author of works such as Concertante, In Memoriam, Two Fighting Poems for Baritone Y Dance of the naive teenager.
He has received decorations and distinctions in Europe, Latin America and Cuba, including the Doctorate in Arts Honoris Causa from the University of the Arts, the National Award for Artistic Education, the Maestro de Juventudes Award, the Alejo Carpentier Medal and the Felix Order. Varela.
The award will be delivered on December 30 in the Avellaneda hall of the National Theater of Cuba with a concert by the National Symphony, in homage to the 50th anniversary of the Nueva Trova Movement.
The National Music Award was instituted in 1997. It is granted by the Cuban Institute of Music to living Cuban musicians for all their work in the fields of creation and interpretation.
