Higüey, La Altagracia.- During the Eucharist for Altagracia Day and in the presence of President Luis Abinader, Bishop Jesús Castro Marte criticized the employment situation in which immigrants find themselves in the country, especially Haitians.
He advocated for there to be a legal framework and resolve the irregular immigration of foreign workers who are mostly employed in the agricultural field, construction and hospitality.
Castro Marte requested that Dominican businessmen implement better working conditions, guarantee access to social and medical security for hired workers.
“We have to have social sensitivity. We are going to make the effort to find a legal solution, never make them citizens or Dominicans, we cannot mention lies. Those who come from other places are of great importance, not only from the sister Republic of Haiti, but from other countries,” he noted.
He clarified that, although he considers himself a defender of the country, he believes that double standards on the immigration issue should be stopped to help people who contribute to the growth of the economy.
“The noise of a self-conscious and manipulated minority does not represent the friendly, fair and supportive spirit of the Dominican people in relation to immigrants. Regarding the immigration issue, what is called a double standard prevails that does not identify us,” he indicated.
