The women’s team Tigers beat this Thursday by 4-0 Monterrey in the W Champions Cup Concacaf. Tigres moved up to second place in Group A, led by Costa Rican side Alajuelense, which beat Frazsiers 5-0 on Tuesday. The Champions Cup brings together 10 of the top women’s teams from North, Central America and the Caribbean.
The pupils of Spanish coach Milagros Martínez won at home with goals from Maricarmen Reyes, Jenny Hermoso, South African Thembi Kgatlana and Cristina Ferral. Against a disconnected opponent, with weak coverage on the side defended by Samantha Simental, Tigres pressed from the start.
Monterrey, whose bench is played by Costa Rican Amelia Valverde, held out until Maricarmen Reyes scored the 1-0 in the 23rd minute after a pass from Jacqueline Ovalle. The locals went for more and in the 32nd minute they increased the lead with a header from Jenni Hermoso, who accepted a pass from Ovalle, with great sacrifice in the match. Simental lost a ball in stoppage time. Sthepany Mayor passed the ball to Kgatlana, who increased the lead with a right foot.
Monterrey improved little in the second half, but Tigres showed disrespect to the league champions, appearing on the wings and creating danger until Ferral scored the fourth goal in the 70th minute. In the 93rd minute, Rebeca Bernal shot wide in the clearest chance for Valverde’s team.
