Game 4 will be played today, also at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies (2-1) dominated the Padres in their opener at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia to retake the lead in this best-of-seven series. Suarez (1-0) took the ball and for five innings held off Padres batters, who scored two runs on him, one of them unearned, and struck out three batters for the win.
Right-hander Joe Musgrove (1-1) fell short of his victory goal for the Padres, allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings, striking out five batters.
Kyle Schwarber opened the scoring with a homer that went over the right-field wall in the Phillies’ offense’s first at-bat. The Padres responded by scoring the tying return in the fourth inning, when with men on first and third, Jake Cronenworth grounded out to the shortstop, but Jean Segura missed receiving the ball to run a double play, allowing Juan Soto will score from the anteroom to level the match (1-1).
Segura was in charge of making up for himself at the close of that same episode, when with two outs and men on third and second, he followed a curveball by Musgrove, which connected to the short field in center field to drive in two runs and put him back in the lead ( 3-1) to the Phillies.
In the fifth inning, first baseman Rhys Hoskins made an error when fielding a shot by Trent Grisham, who advanced to second base on the play and then scored on a ground ball by South Korea’s Ha-Seong Kim, to bring the Padres closer to one run (3 -two). The Phillies returned to the attack in the sixth inning, adding one more run scored, by a double after two outs by Alec Bohm.
Reliever José Alvarado pitched a scoreless inning and struck out two batters to set the stage for Seranthony Domínguez. Seranthony (1) completed two innings of a runless hit and struck out three rivals to win the save.
