Jean Elizabeth Manes, nominated by the US as ambassador to Colombia

The president of United States, Joe Biden, nominated, this Tuesday, January 3, the diplomat Jean Elizabeth Manes as ambassador to Colombia, where he will have to address the new drug and immigration policy proposed by the country’s president, Gustavo Petro.

If ratified by the Senate of his country, Manes will be in charge of directing the embassy in Bogotá, a position that has been held on an interim basis by Francisco Palmieri since June 2022.

The nominee is currently United States Army Central Command civilian adviser and served between 2016 and 2019 as ambassador in El Salvador, in addition to having worked in the representations of Afghanistan, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Syria.

Originally from the state of Florida, she speaks fluent Spanish and French, and has studies in Public Administration and International Relations, the White House detailed in a statement.

Manes will be Biden’s representative before the Petro government in Colombia, which has proposed to the United States a comprehensive drug policy that does not focus on the eradication of crops.

It has also asked the United States to consider applying the humanitarian Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) program to Colombian migrants in the country.

This programme, from which countries such as Venezuela or Liberia, allows migrants from countries experiencing conflict or natural disasters to remain in the United States.

Colombian Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva, visiting Washington on Friday, December 30, he opined before the press that relations with the United States “they are having a great time“and that the work with the government of Joe Biden”it is wonderful” although some differences on immigration and drug trafficking issues.
