JCE presented implications of unification of elections

JCE presentó implicaciones de unificación elecciones

Although the Plenary of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) will not express any opinion regarding the unification of the elections, he warned yesterday before the bicameral commission that is studying the bill that proposes to reform the Constitution, that taking that decision would lead to long electoral queues, the increase of electoral contentious conflicts and uncertainty regarding the results, because the first bulletin would be issued at 1:00 in the morning.

The implications of the unification of the elections are contained in an analysis presented by the president of the JCE, Roman Jaquezwho explained that the JCE will respect the final decision issued by the Senate of the Republic.

“In reality, we delegate, as the body that presented implications and needs, the position that the JCE will assume, in the sense that the bicameral chamber understands it,” said Jáquez.

The report, which was presented behind closed doors, notes that this change would also entail a reduction in the number of voters per polling station and an increase in the number of polling stations.

If the joint holding of elections is approved, it would also be necessary to extend the voting day by one more hour, which would entail a modification of article 236 of the Organic Law of the Electoral Regime 20-23as well as the establishment of an automated voting system or the acquisition of more technological equipment for counting votes.

In this regard, the body stressed that the implementation of electronic voting for the upcoming elections would entail facing the challenge of restoring public confidence, which was damaged by the attempted electoral fraud incident in 2020.

Once the meeting was over, Pedro Catrainpresident of the bicameral commission, minimized the concerns expressed by the Plenary of the JCE and assured that it would not be a problem after the success of the recent elections held this year.
