JCE orders investigation into alleged statements by Haitian children

JCE ordena investigar supuestas declaraciones de niños haitianos

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has ordered the immediate conduct of a thorough and exhaustive investigation into allegations of alleged declarations by Haitian children as Dominicans, ordering the collection of reliable statistical information regarding births registered in the civil registry.

The entity promised that the results of the investigation would be made available to the public.

The agency in charge of civil registration explained that according to the provisions of the Dominican legal system, the sons and daughters of foreigners who are in transit or residing illegally in Dominican territory are not Dominicans and are required to register in the Foreigners’ Book, complying with the procedure established by law.

“In this sense, this constitutional body is a faithful guarantor of the sovereignty of the Dominican people and of the other characteristics that identify us as a Nation and, under the guidelines of the current Plenary and with the commitment and integrity that characterizes the employees of this body, we reiterate that the civil registry is protected against actions that could threaten its integrity, which is why all registrable acts are instrumented, in strict compliance with what is established by the Constitution of the Republic, the laws and the decisions of the courts,” reads a document.
