Javier Ordóñez case: Patrolman Harvy Rodríguez is convicted of the crime

A specialized criminal judge from Bogotá issued sense of conviction against patrolman Harvy Damián Rodríguez Díazfor his responsibility in the death of the law student, Javier Humberto Ordóñez Bermúdez, which occurred on September 9, 2020, in the northwest of Bogotá.

The decision was made by the judicial official, after studying all the evidence and arguments presented by the Prosecutor’s Office during the process that was carried out against the patrolman for the crimes of homicide and torture in the events surrounding the death of the law student.

A prosecutor from the Specialized Directorate against Human Rights Violations demonstrated that the defendant participated in the police procedure in which Mr. Ordóñez Bermúdez was violently subdued and subjected with several electric shocks caused with a taser-type device.

Similarly, it was established that the uniformed coordinated the transfer of the law student to the CAI of Villa Luz, in the town of Engativá, where there were other physical attacks that led to his deathas established by the autopsy report carried out by the Institute of Legal Medicine.

For the Prosecutor’s Office, the then member of the National Police acted disproportionately against the victimwho was in a defenseless state.

They also pointed out that the patrolman he did not fulfill his role as a police officer, since he did not prevent the attacks against the student from occurring, but rather, on the contrary, he participated in the beatingskicks and attacks against Ordóñez.

In this sense, patrolman Rodríguez Díaz will receive a sentence for the crimes of homicide and torture, both aggravated behaviorsHowever, the penalty will be announced at a hearing to be held in June 2023.
