Javier Mileihas taken a decision that has caused a great stir in the political and social sphere of the country. On Friday evening, the president signed a total veto of the pension law that had recently been approved by Congress.
This measure, which modifies the pension formula and seeks to restore the income of retirees, was vetoed by Javier Milei with the aim of sending a message of firmness and authority. The pension law had been approved by a large majority in the Senate, with the support of more than two thirds of the legislators.
However, Milei decided to veto it, arguing that the measure did not consider the fiscal impact it would have on the country’s public accounts. According to the president, the law would represent an additional expenditure of approximately 6,160,000,000,000 pesos for the year 2024 and 15,430,000,000,000 pesos for the year 2025, which would be equivalent to 1.02% and 1.64% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) respectively.
The veto of Milei He is not only seeking to maintain fiscal balance, but also to reaffirm his position against what he calls the “political caste.” On several occasions, the president has criticized traditional politicians, accusing them of being hypocritical and of not taking care of the country’s finances.
With this decision, Milei He is trying to show that he is willing to take drastic measures to protect the Argentine economy, even if it means confronting Congress and the opposition. The signing of the veto took place at the Casa Rosada, where Milei was accompanied by his sister and Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei.
During the day, the president met with deputies and senators from the allied blocs to discuss the measure and ensure their support. According to official sources, Milei worked with the Legal and Technical Secretariat, the Ministry of Economy and the National Administration of Social Security (ANSES) to prepare the technical reports that justify the veto.
Reactions
The reaction to the signing of the veto has been mixed. On the one hand, supporters of Javier Milei They applaud his decision, considering it a sign of leadership and fiscal responsibility. They argue that the pension law, as approved, would have generated an unsustainable deficit and compromised Argentina’s economic future.
Opponents, on the other hand, criticise the president for not seeking a negotiated solution and for taking a measure that, according to them, harms retirees and the most vulnerable sectors of society.
