Inter Miami of the MLS announced this Tuesday the Argentine Javier Mascherano as its new coach a week after the departure of his compatriot Gerardo Martino.
Mascherano, until now coach of the Argentina under-20 team, signs with Inter Miami for three seasons, until 2027, according to a statement from the club.
In Miami, Mascherano will coach his former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. With them, he won two editions of the European Cup and five Leagues, as well as other trophies.
He will also coach some of the players he has had in Argentina’s youth ranks such as Tomás Avilés, Facundo Farías, Federico Redondo and Benjamin Cremaschi.
Mascherano replaces Martino on the bench, who announced his departure last week for “strictly personal” reasons.
After a magnificent regular season with a record of points in the MLS, Inter was unexpectedly eliminated in the first round of the title playoffs.
Another name that had been mentioned to replace Martino is that of also former Barcelona player Xavi Hernández.
“Being able to lead a club like Inter Miami is an honor for me, it is a privilege that I will try to make the most of,” Mascherano, who said he was attracted by “the ambition of the organization,” said in a statement.
