The president of the UDI, Javier Macaya, cleared doubts regarding the position of his sector regarding the post-plebicite. Among the main criticisms that the Rejection has received is the lack of clarity regarding the position that they will take after the elections this Sunday and given this, the union leader decided to clarify the intentions of those who oppose this new Constitution.
“We are convinced that we are in a constituent process that cannot be reversed. The Constitutional Convention missed a very important opportunity to build a text that could unite Chile”, commented Macaya in an interview with El País.
He also added that “we understand that, although we are immersed in a change of cycle and that we have to have a new Constitution, the text that is plebiscite is not adequate. It is the reason why, although we will reject the draft of the new Constitution, the Chilean right has a commitment to the continuity of the constituent process“.
“The UDI is essentially a Democratic party and assumes that in the entry plebiscite almost 80% of the voters were for a new Constitution. We understand that we must be able to close the constituent issue, but close it well, with a majority consensus,” he added.
The union leader took advantage of criticizing the new Constitution. “Today, no one defends the project because of its content. The vast majority of those who are for the Approval are about to modify, but they forget to point out that it would be very difficult to do so in the future, ”he emphasized.
Finally, he stated that “we all have to live up to the moment that Chile is experiencing and we have to try to seek the maximum possible consensus, which includes all political sectors. But with the project that allows the constitutional modification by four sevenths, neither the extreme right nor the extreme left will be able to impose vetoes“.
